Actual reporting? By reporters? I’m so confused…

September 13th, 2008 · Uncategorized

Must-read article in the New York Times today. So much good stuff:

WASILLA, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin lives by the maxim that all politics is local, not to mention personal.

So when there was a vacancy at the top of the State Division of Agriculture, she appointed a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, to the $95,000-a-year directorship. A former real estate agent, Ms. Havemeister cited her childhood love of cows as a qualification for running the roughly $2 million agency.

Throughout her political career, she has pursued vendettas, fired officials who crossed her and sometimes blurred the line between government and personal grievance, according to a review of public records and interviews with 60 Republican and Democratic legislators and local officials.

As she assembled her cabinet and made other state appointments, those with insider credentials were now on the outs. But a new pattern became clear. She surrounded herself with people she has known since grade school and members of her church.

The Wasilla High School yearbook archive now doubles as a veritable directory of state government. Ms. Palin appointed Mr. Bitney, her former junior high school band-mate, as her legislative director and chose another classmate, Joe Austerman, to manage the economic development office for $82,908 a year. Mr. Austerman had established an Alaska franchise for Mailboxes Etc.

While Ms. Palin took office promising a more open government, her administration has battled to keep information secret. Her inner circle discussed the benefit of using private e-mail addresses. An assistant told her it appeared that such e-mail messages sent to a private address on a “personal device” like a BlackBerry “would be confidential and not subject to subpoena.”

Many lawmakers contend that Ms. Palin is overly reliant on a small inner circle that leaves her isolated. Democrats and Republicans alike describe her as often missing in action. Since taking office in 2007, Ms. Palin has spent 312 nights at her Wasilla home, some 600 miles to the north of the governor’s mansion in Juneau, records show.

During the last legislative session, some lawmakers became so frustrated with her absences that they took to wearing “Where’s Sarah?” pins.

Many politicians say they typically learn of her initiatives — and vetoes — from news releases.

Mayors across the state, from the larger cities to tiny municipalities along the southeastern fiords, are even more frustrated. Often, their letters go unanswered and their pleas ignored, records and interviews show.

The administration’s e-mail correspondence reveals a siege-like atmosphere. Top aides keep score, demean enemies and gloat over successes. Even some who helped engineer her rise have felt her wrath.

As Ms. Palin’s star ascends, the McCain campaign, as often happens in national races, is controlling the words of those who know her well. Her mother-in-law, Faye Palin, has been asked not to speak to reporters, and aides sit in on interviews with old friends.

If you were watching closely, you could tell that whoever was running the projector at the Republican Convention did a really sloppy job. I thought this moment in particular was really off-message:

Barack Obama’s acceptance speech:

The times are too serious, the stakes are too high for this same partisan playbook… If you don’t have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from. You make a big election about small things.

McCain Manager: ‘This Election is Not About Issues’

Rick Davis, campaign manager for John McCain’s presidential bid, insisted that the presidential race will be decided more over personalities than issues during an interview with Post editors this morning.

This election is not about issues,” said Davis. “This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates.”

Regarding Sarah Palin…

August 29th, 2008 · Uncategorized

This is a new era in American history. No matter who wins, a long-standing barrier will be broken. At long last, a non-contiguous state will be represented in the White House!

If only Eisenhower was still here to see the realization of his beautiful dream. *sniff*

Yes, humanfleshsearchengine.com is taken.

Oh, internet.

Is there anything you can’t obsess over?

Net mob search for iPhone girl’s identity:

China’s “human flesh search engine” is in hot pursuit of an unnamed Chinese factory worker after photographs of her showed up unexpectedly on a new iPhone 3G purchased recently in Britain.

FoxConn representatives have confirmed to several Chinese newspapers that the woman – dubbed the “iPhone girl” – is an employee of the company.

The spokesman said workers had most probably been testing the phone’s camera and had forgotten to delete the photos. He said those involved would not be fired for the mistake.

“Small mistakes are unavoidable,” the news agency AFP quoted FoxConn spokesman Liu Kun as saying. “I would call this a beautiful mistake.”

That we have the opportunity to go straight from the most cartoonishly awful president in history straight to this… it just boggles my mind.

The Daily Schmear with Jon Stewart

August 27th, 2008 · Uncategorized

Did you know there’s a quasi-official Comedy Central Indecision 2008 blog? Neither did I, and we weren’t missing much, because it’s nothing special.

However, I did think that this sort-of-backstage account of Jon Stewart’s breakfast with the press was pretty interesting, even if it is arbitrarily split up into three pages:

“I can’t believe that, as reporters, you would walk into a ’spin room’,” he said, amazed at the journalists’ willingness to swallow the bullshit that the campaign and candidates spoon feed them. “How can you keep talking to people who are lying to you?” he asked. “This loveless marriage [between reporters and politicians] has to be unconsummated.”

If Barack Obama is Tommy Carcetti, does that make McCain Clarence Royce?

August 26th, 2008 · Uncategorized

In these contentious times, it’s nice to see that there are some things everyone can agree on.

Barack Obama, in the Las Vegas Sun:

Michael Kostroff, an actor who was in town to volunteer for Obama and had a chance to meet him, told the Sun that Obama’s favorite TV show is his own: HBO’s “The Wire,” which chronicles Baltimore’s violent drug culture and the police who quixotically try to stop it.

Obama told the Sun his favorite character is Omar, a stick-up artist who steals from drug dealers and then gives the loot to poor people in the neighborhood.

“That’s not an endorsement. He’s not my favorite person, but he’s a fascinating character.”

John McCain, in Entertainment Weekly:

Sometimes I win the arm wrestling contest, but foolishly she continues to try to assert her control over the remote. This is a battle that will continue for a long time. But there are shows we agree on. We like the reruns of Seinfeld. I really like Curb Your Enthusiasm. I kind of like Dexter, too, although it certainly has a macabre side to it. I’ll tell you that Cindy likes Big Love — I haven’t watched it much, but she enjoys that. And I like The Wire a lot, too. That’s a great show.
