Sometimes, I kick myself for buying a Wii when I see all the cool stuff that people can do on their Xbox 360’s. Then I remember that I can play every Super Mario game ever made, that I don’t have an HDTV, that I can’t afford a monthly fee for Xbox Live, and that I’d never be able to play any of those pretty shoot-em-ups or time-sucking RPG’s anyway, due to the restrictions outlined in the Filial Responsibilities Act of 2004 (in other words, I have kids and stuff).
But every once in a while, some cool stuff comes along for the Wii that makes the world just a little nicer. First of all, there’s an easy new way to hack your Wii to run homebrew software, called the Homebrew Channel. All you need is an SD card and a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. One of the coolest new hacks lets you watch DVD’s on your Wii. I don’t know who doesn’t already have a DVD-playing device at this point, but it’s awesome…in concept!
Secondly, Manton Reece has released an update to his super-sweet Mac shareware application, Wii Transfer. Now you can not only back up saved games and play your iTunes music on the Wii, you can also stream most common movie formats to the Wii, and—this is the real killer feature—transfer pictures of your Mii to your Mac! No more blurry TV snapshots or contraband grey-market Mii simulators!
Friends, I don’t think I need to tell you…this completely changes everything we thought we knew about where we can view cartoony avatar renderings of ourselves.
